Protect Your Reputation-Practice Truth in Advertising

Being an affiliate marketer, internet entrepreneur, product spokes person or a sales person, of any type you know that your reputation is a tool that you must protect at all costs.  The slightest dent or ding will without a doubt tarnish that rep and hamper your chances of converting any pitches into sales.

With that said take a look at this trailer for Food, Inc.Food, Inc. is a documentary that presents an incredible view into a side of food processing that we would otherwise not see.  As the consumer we only see the end product and Food, Inc.. shows what appears to be a less glamorous and inhumane side of the Food Industry.

Now take a look at this advertisement (pitch) and endorsement for a very popular milk brand that I am sure we all have drunk before.

There is a big discrepancy between what young Miss Gomez and the milk company are pitching and what Food, Inc.has on film. Miss. Gomez’s script has her leading the consumer to envision happy cows wandering in the sunshine, loved and pampered by their happy farmer, all living on a farm where the cows have lovely names.

Where on the other hand the documentary, which you will want to watch from start to finish, depicts a more graphic situation of cows being tethered to mechanical milking machines while in a chemically induced perpetual pregnancy, as to not interrupt the lactating stream.

Now, I can’t and won’t make any claims as to who is telling the truth and who is not practicing Truth in Advertising; you’ll have to do that for yourself. But, the point I want to make is that you’ll want to have a clear understanding about the background of the products you’re pitching. Because although you are promoting something as harmless [ as milk ] you’re also lending your endorsement to the production methods of that product.

I’m sure some of us that are old enough remember the Kathy Lee Gifford debacle in the mid 90’s.

Watch Food, Inc. in its entirety. Share your thoughts. I’ll see you in the comments….

Ms. Freeman, you make a great point there. Hearing what they had to say in the first video is pretty freakin’ alarming. I try to buy organic (milk, fruits) but sometimes it doesn’t seem to be an option. Definitely something to think about.

Not only that, but Ms. Gomez comes off as ignorant to how cows may be actually treated and how milk may be actually processed. One should be cognoscente of what they are endorsing, fully. Is she comfortable and accepting of possible social and ethical backlash, as an endorsement represents agreement in the production of a product, processes included.

This is a fantastic post. What a tremendous contrast in the pitched product and reality. Much of this I think people already suspect to some degree, but choose to ignore or not look into the topic as much as we perhaps should (including yours truly).

Truth in advertising has been out of hand for many years and the government representatives know it, but continue to cater to the wishes of lobbyists who contribute heavily to their campaigns. Alright, I’ll get off my soap box, just don’t get me started. LOL

In the blogging world, your word is your bond and there is no corporate veil to hide behind. Honesty is what makes and breaks.

Thanks for this really nice post.

Yes I had know idea how much the gov’t plays a part in the food on our table and the back office deal and all out war that goes into keeping myself and others ignorant to the fact. Yes, granted in all actuality I chose to be ignorant to that fact, but you know the day “if you know better you will do better”. I think I am done with beef at least for now, until I can get my hands on all natural organic and humane beef at a decent price. Wishful thinking? Probably.

In blogging it is paramount to one’s LEGITIMATE success and longevity to be honest and aware of their products from start to the end user. Yes, we all can make a quick buck and lie our way to it, but in the long one the consumer and the con end are the ones that up losing.

Thanks for your thoughtful comment and you and your soap box are most welcome to comment anytime. ;)

I know what you’re saying though. I for one am quite the taskmaster when it comes to promoting/endorsing anything; you just can’t be afraid to turn anything away and hope they admire your ethics.

    Great post!
    Thanks so much.
So important for consumers to practice “critical thinking” when viewing advertising… both online and offline.
There are too many tricks and manipulating strategies being used to sway us. (e.g. consider the beauty industry…)

I do believe that are a lot of good advertisers out there who use effective marketing strategies, with integrity and truth.
And, there are many great products available that we ought and need to know about.
Yet, buyers need to make conscious choices and “read between the lines” more often than not.
It’s almost to the point where there should be classes taught in high school on how to view advertising and make buying decisions…

Ads are made to be so pleasing to the eye, so colorful and whimsical and many of us over look the fact that we should be doing our own fact finding. But as bloggers and spokes people for affiliates and products we should understand what we are pitching.

I really try not to think about the depth of this stuff for the most part, it would probably just cause me to not eat and drink the things I enjoy in life. However I will say that I personally feel business owners have a responsibility to be truthful in their advertising.
