Akismet without a doubt is the most valuable WordPress Plugin installed on this blog. Fortunately it comes pre-installed on nearly every Word Press Theme, so ones blog is protected from the moment it goes live.
Akismet is free to use for personal blogging, but they definitely would like to be paid if a blogger is making over $500 bucks a month. Um, I get to us it for free.

With the Akismet plug-in

Bloggers are able to spend more time creating content rather than spending time deleting spammy comments. It also makes for a more pleasant commenting environment for my blog readers. I for one very rarely leave a comment on sites that require me to jump through hoops to do so. No crazy blurred code needed nor are you required to log in to voice your opinion.

It works well for me

So far in the five months that Freeman Legacy LLC has been online as a blog, Akismet has caught 744 Spam and 598 Ham comments. Ham is spam’s counterpart and is a legitimate comment that got caught up in the spam filter for one reason or another.

Spam vs. Ham

Spam usually contains a lot of self promoting trackback links or excessive html, usually promoting smut, porn or something pharmaceutical.

Ham is a little bit more deceptive as it looks legit and spammy at the same time. For instance “Nice information check out my latest post http://www…..” This comment will go into moderation. And I have to make the decision whether to let the comment stand or delete it. If it is from a regular reader/commenter it will probably be approved where as a new reader will probably sit in moderation until they have commented a few more times.

Akismet’s accuracy rate on my blog is 97.019%

which equates to a lot of time saved for more pressing matters like writing this little poem….no I’m not a poet and I know it.

I love thee for keeping me spam free….
I love thee for keeping the comments worthy to read….
I love thee because I rarely need to moderate….
I love thee because you have such a high accuracy rate?
