Do you write for your readers?
I have been thinking about this on and off this weekend. Should a blogger write to the readers already visiting on a regular basis? Or. Should a blogger write for the readers that will one day visit?
The answer to that question is to write to the reader that has not arrived yet? Write to the readers you want to bring to your blog. Why? Catering solely to the current readership will inevitably cause a blog to go stale and predictable. Maybe it’s the woman in me, but I don’t care to be predictable.
Catering to just the current readership could cause one to tip toe around subjects of controversy, if a particular reader has declared distain for certain subject matter. Same too for just providing repetitive information to current readers because one knows that is what brought them there, and in an effort to keep the reader there we resort to churning the same information just re-hashed to appear fresh.
Writing to a broader range, a wider scope if you will is the way to keep a blog growing and flourishing. How do you know if your content is catering to the same audience? Here’s how. Besides reviewing your stats for unique visits simply look at your comments? Are the same folks commenting or are you getting new reader input regularly.
One way to find new readers is of course write killer content, but also to comment on other blogs even the ones outside your chosen niche. Well that isn’t new news now is it? Nope so get out there and visit new neighborhoods and make new friends, and most importantly introduce your new friends to your old friends.
What do you think friend? Who do you write for?
UPDATE: I don’t want my current readers and commentators to think they are less than. You are all a tremendous delight and value to this blog.

Yes that is true! I should have said that in the post. I don’t want my current readers and commentators to think they are less than.
As a matter of fact let me go back and make that update immediately. Thanks Dana
I’d like to think I know what my visitors want but instead, I usually turn to emails and comments they provide me with other topics. So whether they’re regulars or made a one-time visit, their input is value to me.

Email are a great source for inspiration and topics, I use them often as well.
There is no question that you should right for readers in “general”, regardless of current or new visitors. After all, the current ones where once new and this is the only way you can maintain your loyal readers but gain new ones as well.
