10 Reasons I Stop Reading Blogs
Have you ever suffered a break up from a significant other? Yeah me too. And in an effort to gain some closure you ask why? But all they can muster is the phrase of all phrases “It’s not you it’s me” or “Let’s just be friends”.
It’s not you it’s your blog. Don’t you just want to say that very same thing to some of the blogs you have been reading either for a long time or even some that you just met? Yeah me too.
Here are some reasons I tend to break up with a blog:
10 Reasons I Stop Reading Blogs
1. My comments constantly go into moderation
-trust your readers enough to let them speak there mind and allow others to reply at the same time the post is published. Don’t moderate every single comment. Moderating a comment hours or days later is really of no value to the conversation.
2. You rarely if ever respond to mine or anyone else’s comments
-we have taken the time to acknowledge what you wrote and voiced an opinion, keep the conversation going. This encourages a return visit.
3. You present yourself as an authority, but don’t have the content or stat ranking to back up your claim
-be honest and up front with your readers, if you think you know how to make money but haven’t yet then say so. Don’t claim to be bigger than you really are, you will have to show it one day.
4. You don’t visit me even though I hang out with you all the time
-you are aware of who is visiting your blog even if they don’t leave a comment-at least you should know- take a moment to reciprocate and stop by and meet and greet.
5. Your neighborhood is not a very good one I don’t feel safe
-you have some pretty good content and your blog looks awesome, but your neighbors sucks. You need to move and stop linking to those that rank as unethical and distrustful. They’ll bring you down my friend.
6. You leave lame comments on other blogs only to be seen, but don’t really add any value
-hanging out on the blogs of the ‘gurus’ and posting comments like “You are so smart that’s why you make so much money” is totally lame, especially when you say it five times on the same post. Even worse is when you try so hard to be the first to comment and it is clear you didn’t even read the post first.
7. It was free to visit your site yesterday, now you want me to pay you monthly to get the best of you
-look if your content was free yesterday then it should be free tomorrow. I and others have linked to it because it was phenomenal.
8. Who are you? I don’t even know you anymore. Tell me about yourself again
-i thought I knew you when I was reading your post. I wanted to find out more about you but you don’t have an About Me page.
9. Don’t talk to me while I’m reading it is so disruptive-Stop it
-when I land on your page I don’t want to be startled by an audio bubble yelling “Hi, I am SOnSO, welcome to my blog”. Any audio you have on your blog should not be set to Auto Play. I’d like to decide whether to listen to you or not.
10. Where have you been?
-i need to know when to expect you, either daily, weekly or even more often. Don’t write and then leave. You really have to be consistent with your stuff. If I don’t hear from you after a couple of weeks I assume you left. And I’m off to find another blog.
So there you have it 10 Reasons I Stop Reading Blogs. What are some things that are a big turn off to you? A better question may be is there a need for blog etiquette? Leave a comment and share your thoughts. I promise I will respond.

Uh-oh. I am guilty of a couple of those things but I promise it is only temporary.
I have missed you but see you are drumming up some good stuff over here. I do have a question for you about number 4 – how do people know who is visiting them? Sometimes in my stats I can tell who has been by but a lot of people come by way of readers and it will just show a stat of like 6 people came via google. I always wanted to know how I can tell who came that way. If you know, do you mind telling me? I also joined some stat counter thing and it tells me some stuff but you would have to pay to get more info and I’m not sure it is worth it or not. I’ve been blogging a couple years now and I’m still such a noob. sheesh.
Hi there Teeni!
I am so glad you found me here. Welcome and I appreciate your comment!
You are guilty of nothing, it is good that you have such a productive life off-line….between this blog and my concierge service and full time job I am soooo busy busy busy too
Number 4 – how do people know who is visiting them?-I am only referring to the folks that you can see have visited via widgets like MyBlogLog, Blog Catalog and comments etc. I am not aware of any other way of knowing.
Hope to see you again soon and Have a Merry Christmas!
Hey Ms Freeman!
I just turned OFF comment moderation at http://www.donpower.ME (I think!).
The learning curve is still pretty steep for me on the mechanics of blogging (ie: is that a Wordpress function or a Thesis function? Does that go in the header.php or Thesis Theme options?) ARghh!
Anyway, good post – hopefully I successfully tuened off comment moderation as per your recommendation of how to keep folks reading your blog. As soon as I can find the time, I’m going to hool up DOFollow and CommentLuv to give folkds even more reason to leave a comment.
Thanks for visiting my blog too!

Hi Don and welcome to my blog
Being a virtual newbie I am still finding my way as well. Please don’t turn off your moderator unless that is something you feel is good for your blog.
What I am referring to is not moderating the reader/commenter that has visited before and has left comments previously. I moderate all first time commenters, but after that they can comment freely. I’m not a fan of visiting someone’s blog daily reading a post and commenting on it only to have my comment put into moderation.
I love CommentLuv and am in the process of moving to DoFollow as soon as I get some kind of PageRank.
Ms. Freeman,
Great post.(Very Natural and REAL!)#7 Is a trickey one. I think many bloggers are looking to monetize their blog. But Sometimes they forget about the needs of their readers and wind up loosing readers. I think this is a gray that has to be thought out carefully.
Best Regards
