Don’t Be a Spammy Sammy!

I am growing my email list by about five subscribers a day and I welcome and respect each enrollee.

Let me repeat that, I welcome and I RESPECT each enrollee. What I mean by that is I don’t send daily emails, I don’t re-hash my blog post and send them everyday nor do I send Sales Copy everyday.

That’s so Spammy!
I have signed up for many a email list only to receive the first welcome email along with the link to a free item. Then BAM! I get a daily email, a weekly newsletter of all the weeks’ posts and then I get a “Buy My Product” email. I find these kinds of tactics bad business and I immediately unsubscribe.

Play by the rules!
Please know that when you sign up for my email list I will not spam you. I will in fact notify my readers via a post prior to a newsletter or mailing will be going out. It’s not a written rule that I have to, but doesn’t that make for a better blogging community?

What are your thoughts on Email Marketing? How do you manage your email campaigns?

  1. Yeah, daily email is really annoying for me because mostly do not have useful content in it. The best milist that i join only email me once a week with great content.

The newsletter list that I have been subscribed to the longest is one that sends their email out every Saturday night at around 11.

I like the consistency and I don’t mind that there are ads.

Each newsletter is like the “old fashioned” newsletters of the 90’s

I still think that method works the best.

We use iContact for our email campaigns.

  4. We get enough spam without being spammed by newsletters we sign up to.

  5. I came to your blog from Dana’s blog. I read your first post and guess it impressed me. I began reading your other posts and I loved them too… Really nice posts.

Considering this post I have the opinion that daily e-mail isn’t a that good option…. but if you have to keep your readers updated regularly as and when your blog is updated, its good. But remember not to use your each and every newsletter as a promotional one.

  6. David Shaw says:

RSS feeds and newsletters should be seperate!

One is for people who want to receive your daily updates. The other is for you to contact people about special events, new developments, monthly updates etc!

Very Good point David, I think some email marketers forget that their readers have the option to subscribe to thier feed. I subscribe to nearly every blog I read, so getting another copy of a post in my emial box is quite annoying. Thanks for your comment! :)

I try not to bombard my list with constant emails – I aim for one per week at the most.

  9. Sorry I’m so late int he reply Ms. Freeman – We’ve talked about this before. I think you’re bang on with this post. Email marketing (something that is on my todo list to start next week) is a great way to keep in touch with your readers.

I’m so tired of spammy sammy that if I get one or two bad emails I just unsubscribe, and I find myself using extra caution before I even sign up for a new list. An email newsletter should be sent out once however often you’ve promoted it as in you sign up box. If it’s weekly monthly or whatever, stick to that schedule. Special offers and sales page are good also. But if they are not over-used. I’d say no more than a couple a month.

You don’t want to turn ppl off by spaming them as soon as they trust you enough to give you their email address. ;)

I know what you mean Heather; I have just about unsubscribed to most of the email lists I have subscribed to. I am also thinking about changing my email marketing provider to a free one while I continue to grow my list. Thanks to the spammers it is even harder for a newbie to build a list.
