To Link or Not To Link That Is The Question

Yesterday I had a case of Bloggers Block so rather than struggle with the block I designated the time to other bloggy task.  I caught up on my feed reading and ventured outside our niche to read other topics of interest.

Whilst reading many fascinating posts I noticed something quite peculiar.  Blog author were referring to other blogs and their subject matter, they were even giving praise to some high profile blogs.  But in a lot of instances these authors were not linking to the blogs they were referring to.

So my question is: Why mention a blog or website but not link to it?  Is there a strategy behind this?

In an effort to get to the bottom of this I did some research and came across Liz Strauss’ blog titled Successful Blogs.  In a post she published in 2005 is a Checklist of Linking to Quality Blogs.  This a checklist of 11 simple questions one should ask before linking to just any blog.  Which led me to another great find about how Link Love Raises Your Property Value ,which make sense; if you hang around in good neighborhoods then their neighbors may see you and pay you a visit and perhaps you may even receive a polite link back as well.  Besides you don’t want to develop a rep for hanging out in the seedy parts of blog-town.

What are your linking strategies?

I try to link to at least one non-affiliate website or blog in each post I publish.  I feel it is another way to build a community and to foster comradeship.  After all there is plenty of room for all of us to succeed.  Right?

The final post I had time to read at Liz’s was Think before you link; Oops! Now I wish I had read this post first. I have provided three really awesome post links and I know you will want to rush over to read them, but please be sure to leave us a comment about your thoughts on the subject of linking.

Hi. I have a great blogging community of friends that I link to and they don’t have to necessarily be from my same niche. As you probably know, one way I found to give link luvs is through my weekly roundup, or Weekly Echo as I call it. It is great to share other people’s post, because you also provide value by doing so. Being self centered will not succeed in the sphere.

  2. I link if i think it is worthy for my post reader. As simple as that.

  3. I don’t usually go actively searching for pages to link to, but if I have a relevant article in mind while I’m writing, I’ll usually incorporate it into my content. Linking out is important for drawing in visitors that might not usually stop by, and for adding resourcefulness to your blog.

Hi Ms. Corey Freeman! Welcome to my blog :)

You are right linking out is a great way to bring visitors to your blog as well as provide your readers with great resourses to follow-up with.

I only link if I really like the post and think that my readers too would like it.. otherwise it makes no sense..

Very good point, there really isn’tany point in linking to content one doesn’t like and serves not purpose to the reader. Welcome back glad to see you here again:)

As I still believe Google will judge what you link to, so I check the site before dropping a link (Thanks for the link “Checklist for Linking to Quality Blogs”). Then I usually email the author that I have linked to his post. And the result often is I get a new friend on social media site that he and I are active on, or at least he is likely to vote my submit.

I am always linking to other blogs!

I believe that my readers would prefer to read original articles that I am quoting rather than just the snippets that I mention!

I guess being a student I am used to linking to my references!

I think it is good practice and is a good way of making new friends!
