How To Control Your Follower List
John Chow a purported internet guru is cultivating a trending change on Twitter.
When Twitter first started everyone followed whom ever they found interesting and that was it.
Then this wave of reciprocity came over Twitter and it became bad form if one didn’t follow back all those that followed you. There are even programs out there that will auto follow people for you once they have opted to follow you. John Chow even created a site facilitating the growth of Twitter Followers.
So, the other day John Chow did a mass purge of his Following List (the people he follows) which was at 55k down to 113 or so. That’s a big drop. Interesting, there are only 113 people in the world of Twitter that this guy finds of interest.
He stated that he saw a mass exodus of 10k from his Follower list (the people that follow him). Leaving him with 49k followers, but he’s not concerned about that, and he shouldn’t be. If you don’t want to follow someone because they are of interest then don’t follow them. If followers leave you simply because you un-followed them are they worth the bother?
So, it looks like the pendulum will be shifting and shifting quickly. Be prepared to lose followers in droves if they were in fact only following you out of courtesy or strategy.
How to gain more followers and hold onto the ones you have is simple.
Try these simple tips:
*Tweet things of interest and of value- be pertinent to your niche and be respectful of other genders, races and age groups.
* RT( re-tweet) whenever possible- lift others above yourself and they will help you out as well.
*Don’t over Tweet- if you only have a few followers they will feel overwhelmed if you tweet constantly.

I LOVE your theme. It looks really nice
John did something that I was actually already considering doing. I’ve only had twitter for about a month, and I followed the follow me I follow you policy. In reflection, this is a terrible policy. If you don’t have a personal bond with someone, there is no reason to follow them and especially their links. I think building a true following and only following people with similar interest is what twitter was meant for. Purging people you aren’t really following is a great idea for people who can’t keep up with all the people they are following as it is!
Lately, there has been so much written on this topic and the consensus is; nobody seems to agree on what method is best. Personally, I do not like the automated follow system and I like auto DM’s even less. My interest is in Internet marketing and affiliate marketing and I try and follow people who have a similar interest. It’s not an exact science and it can be time consuming but it works for me. Until I find a better way, I’ll keep on being a happy Twitizen:-)
I also agree , doesn’t make any sense to follow someone just because they follow you. I think some people look at who you follow before they decide to follow you, and if you follow anyone then they may get turned off by that, but I’m still new to twitter btw your blog looks great!!
John Chow is hardly the first one to do this, he just has more people talking about it because so many people worship the guy.
I would rather have a quality level to the people I interact with on Twitter.
When I was a new blogger I followed people on Twitter just because I thought they would follow me … and thus I would increase my follower list..
But gaining such followers isn’t worth…. You have followers but what is the point in having followers which would not watch your tweets and have no interest in it and just follow you because you followed them…..
